A Washington, D.C., residence that was hearth and home to President Kennedy hit the open market this week with an asking price of $4.675 million. If that isn’t enough history for you, the Federal-style townhome is sure to provide the additional atmosphere evoked by many a lost era. The year it was built, another great president trod the White House corridors: John Adams. The year was 1800.

The home is situated in the Georgetown neighborhood. Its exterior is distinguished by a potent series of neoclassical elements. Its red brick is offset by white trim and black shutters, making for a traditional first impression that is just as convincing.

The interiors begin with a bright, warm treatment; off-white, even the hardwood wainscoting, with hardwood staircase treads and a stone tile floor. The kitchen, dayroom and living room are all similarly refined; these common spaces boast wide-plank oak which, if not original, is at least antique. Two sets of French doors open to a garden terrace that is suitably private.

Other notable spaces include the library—its paneling and built-ins appear to be mahogany, and it sports a spectacular period fireplace in marble—and the rooftop deck, which is accessible via the master bath, and surveys a very historical neighborhood indeed.

President John Kennedy lived in the home from 1950 to 1953. It underwent a masterful renovation in 2008 by then-owner New York Islanders owner Jon Ledecky.
