Mamie Gummer Lists Wonderfully Eccentric Treehouse Hideout in L.A. for $1.5M

Actress Mamie Gummer, daughter of acting legend Meryl Streep, put her wildly, ebulliently eccentric and uber-rustic ‘treehouse’ in Los Angeles up for sale this winter with an asking price of $1.495 million. The home is located in Beechwood Canyon, and positioned on a bluff, giving the wraparound deck the secretive allure of a house in the canopy, and plentiful green just outside the French casement windows that line the walls.

The home is a feast for those who like surprises. From the slightly off-center clerestory lodged in the poured concrete wall above the master bathroom’s shower to the seemingly endless array of inventively used reclaimed timber—the fridge and freezer doors were especially unexpected—the rustic abode has a lot to say, and represents a strong argument against the contemporary ‘material is style’ sensibility.

The exterior’s raw, vertical clapboard and soft red trim recalls a bygone age. The 1,694 square-footer contains three bedrooms, each an individualistic space, but the standout spaces are the living room—with its marvelous world-weary tile, which has somehow survived the eight decades that have elapsed since the home went up—and the upper floor creative workspace, which is liberated by a series of newer skylights.

Gummer’s recent work includes a supporting role in the latest installment of HBO’s ‘True Detective;’ she also appears in horror maven William Brent Bell’s upcoming feature Separation.
