A unique property in Arizona came and went with astonishing rapidity: this Titan II missile silo. It was listed a couple of weeks ago for $395K, and is now in pending status—presumably at the asking price.

The grim, dark reminder of cold war anxiety sold quickly. Almost half a mil for a rusting hulk of subterranean steel that once helped put the teeth in nuclear détente and the 12 acres of desert and scrub that surround it in the middle of nowhere. And an additional 5 million, one might assume, to convert it into a plush underground survival lair.

The outpost dates to the early 1960s, and extends to over 50 feet beneath the desert sand. It was hearth and home to a 103′-tall Titan II ICBM, an arms race design with a 5,500-mile range and a 9-megaton warhead. The rocket was later put to a different use as a payload delivery method during the space race. It was the largest missile ever developed by the Air Force, and ultimately decommissioned in the early years of the 1980s. The bunker was, of course, reinforced heavily against nuclear attack.
