Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Looking to Shed Monastery-Style Minimalist Condo in Calabasas for $3.5M

This week, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West listed the high-dollar condo they purchased in Calabasas’ own Avanti complex in 2017. The unit has seen a few changes in the intervening years; the duo hired the architectural firm of Vincent Van Duysen to overhaul it.

Van Duysen’s work is spare and very beautiful. His style merges countryside rustic and industrial, and is heavily inspired by the humanism of the Bauhaus school, eschewing ornament as fundamentally an aristocratic indulgence, instead favoring a gracefully egalitarian purposefulness. This particular condo finds Van Duysen’s and Mr. Wests’s styles merging into a bleak amalgamation.

The residence is described as ‘monastery style’; the 2,260 square feet of interiors accumulate into a rather striking odyssey that walks the line between meditative repose and deprivation. Perhaps less monastic than Toffler-esque Gothic.

The stark style is most evident in the kitchen, a blank expression of a space. The stove is reduced to a series of burners with their controls, which removes the familiar appliance from the act of cooking. The cabinetry offers no handles, the counters no generosity of texture.

The common area terminates with a dividing wall with a set of French doors; photos suggest a sunny space beyond, but do not elucidate with a closer look.
