Hiding behind a demarcation line of intensely green hedge on a quiet, winding street in the upper reaches of Hollywood Hills is this critically disarming period English cottage-style owned by Colin Farrell. He listed for $1.5 million a few days ago and landed a buyer almost instantly. The home is pending sale.

The house and setting make for a potent composition. From the street, the house looks invitingly eccentric, with a variety of window shapes and doors; a sweeping roofline accent or two riff on the lush extravagance of storybook style. Its green trim and exposed timbers are set off nicely by the white stucco exterior, and echo the landscaping which frames the home.

Renovation of the interiors of the 1927-built cottage have been minimal, and original details of the house continue to forcefully define it. Although it would be a crime to revise a few of them—the slag glass leaded window is a good example; colored in an adventurous shade, but marvelously evocative of its era. Dark-toned narrow plank floors, a fireplace with a brick hearth step and a tile surround, French doors, a second-floor terrace, an alcove window seat and reading nook, and period light fixtures all contribute to the cottage’s timeless charm.

Even the master suite looks to be fairly untouched. Not a whit of uninteresting material flash in the bath, and the bedroom’s living style is expressed in a whitewashed brick fireplace, casement windows that open to lovely canyon views and scrub in variegated shades of green, and a raised ceiling.

Farrell stars in the upcoming Guy Ritchie feature ‘The Gentlemen’; the film is due in theaters early in the new year.
