Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition Back by Popular Demand

As a forgotten stylistic flourish, the ‘suicide doors’—aka ‘coach doors’—configuration is a strong link to mainstream 60s cool. A lost design trope, they’ve become associated with the power and sheer substance of that era’s best American cars.

In a contemporary context, Lincoln has revised the style by incorporated them into the luxe car lexicon of today—with longer, wider, and more luxurious along for the ride. The company revealed the limited-edition Continental early this year, and wound up with a minor hit: the variant sold well enough that Lincoln execs have resurrected it.

The eight examples produced for the initial promotion sold out quickly. About a month later, Lincoln announced a continuation of the edition. That’s what we’re seeing now as a production car. Lincoln calls it the Coach Door Edition of the 2020 Continental.

As with the first incarnation of the edition, Lincoln brought Massachusetts’ own Cabot Coach Builders in to design the car, which is six inches longer than the original. The car is of course set up as a limo, with full control of climate and entertainment available from a rear console.

Lincoln will make 150 for the model year. Base price is $115K, and deliveries set for the spring.
