Tom Petty’s California Home Finds a Buyer at $4M

Tom Petty’s estate accepted an offer of $4 million for the rocker’s rustic Lake Sherwood escape this month.

The property known as Casa Della Madonna was initially offered for sale by Petty. It first hit the market in March of 2017 with an asking price of $6.2 million. A lengthy series of price reductions whittled away at that figure over the two and a half years it took for the home to find its new owner; the ask prior to the sale was $4.7 million.

The home’s promontory lot makes for knee-buckling views. It’s not a large piece of land, but the forested landscape gives the place a secretive feel despite the proximity of its neighbors.

The house itself is marvelously period and wonderfully eccentric. It dates to 1931, and the fieldstone exterior boasts an authenticity which cannot be engineered in a new home: the stone was sourced from the area. It looks very much like an ancient house in the Italian countryside.

The interiors extend to 5,300 square feet, with three bedrooms and three baths throughout. Common areas get the lion’s share of the attention; the great room is quite large, with an open trussed ceiling, stone floors, and a rococo fireplace. Other details included floors in plank and tile, original carved wood doors, and exterior walls that are four feet thick.

The lot extends to about four-fifths of an acre. The grounds feature mature olive trees, enhancing the Mediterranean feel of the estate.

Petty, a forty-year veteran of the American music scene, died unexpectedly in the fall of 2017, leaving behind many seminal recordings.
