Mercedes revealed the upcoming GLE series coupe recently. And they started at the top, with the figurehead: the AMG version of the model for 2021.

The new AMG GLE boasts design language that is hunkered, concise, and graceful. The fascia snarls, the roof slopes away in fastback style, and it’s high enough to provide the perspective desired by SUV buyers while maintaining an edgy sportiness.

Which it has in spades. The car’s turbo I6 is supplemented with an EQ Boost generator; the combo gives it 429 HP and 384 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel it to 60 in 5.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 155 MPH. The 9-speed auto gearbox works with the 4MATIC+ system for all-wheel control, and the seven drive modes handle on-road and off-road usage contexts.

Inside is the MBUX infotainment system. Digital instrumentation, voice control for the touchscreen, and a dramatic red-on-black color scheme are a few other notable features of the cabin.

It looks mighty fine, but there’s a bit of a wait before the AMG GLE hits showrooms. Look for it about a year from now.
