Billionaire Peter Sperling didn’t only list his turn of the 20th-century San Francisco mansion for sale this year. He is also marketing this period Spanish-style in Los Angeles.
The properties appeared on the market within days of one another. The home in San Francisco is priced at just under $14 million, dates to 1900, and commands superb views of the Bay from its Russian Hill location.
The Los Angeles property is a hacienda that dates to 1927 and is priced at $20.995 million. The exterior sets a charming tone, with a suitably eccentric series of angles and windows, and a frame of romantically landscaped greenery.
Romantic is the word for the interiors, which feature a main-entrance preamble of carved stone, wrought-iron gates, and double doors. A great room follows, a wide-open expression that rises to the roof and suggests release in the strongest manner. A second-floor balcony looks down from three sides of the second floor, and a Spanish Colonial-style chandelier joins the dark wood of the ceiling in establishing an intense living style.
Soft arches, open-trussed ceilings, and many a set of wood-framed French doors amplify the heady period-L.A. atmospherics. The French doors open onto a courtyard embellished with ebullient landscaping and a center water feature, which comprises only a fraction of the considerable Beverly Glen lot size: 1.65 acres.
Interestingly, previous owners of the home include Vincent Price.
Sperling is heir to the University of Phoenix private-education empire. His net worth is in the neighborhood of $1.5 billion.
