Alkiviades David recently picked up a lovely beachfront home in Malibu for $19.1 million, and it’s quite the charming retreat.

The home is a contemporary that dates to the early 1970s, and it looks every bit the expression of its era. Its exterior is almost entirely clad in raw or natural-finished timber and, to a greater extent, the interiors are, too. The resulting living style is as fashionably earthy as the back-to-the-land sensibility of the period.

The first floor living area features plank floors, ceilings and walls; a tile fireplace with a slightly raised hearth step adds a muted, artisanal touch to the room. Demarcation is accomplished by a step to the dining and kitchen area; the kitchen’s updates include stone countertops and contemporary fixtures. A high partial ceiling with skylights above gives the room a very liberated feel.

A staircase with a solid wood balustrade rises to the second floor, where a gallery and accommodations await. There are five bedrooms and 4.5 baths in the 3,847 square-foot home. The master features a private terrace that looks out over the beach, and a second floor family room offers access to a second, larger terrace on the roof.

David is a Greek entrepreneur and heir to a bottling and manufacturing enterprise, among other activities. His net worth is north of $1 billion.
