Dean Martin’s one-time home in Brentwood sold this month for $5.2 million—against an asking price of about $5 million.

The period Spanish ranch is nestled in a verdant and private corner of Mandeville Canyon. It dates to 1938, and was designed by architect Cliff May, the man who brought the courtyard to SoCal by making traditional ranch-style living an expression of an upper-class lifestyle.

The elements of a charming Spanish-style are all here: the softness of white stucco setting off the terra-cotta roof tiles, a gated entrance opening onto an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, casement windows of sundry sizes, and ivy a-plenty. And more tile—lots more of it, and much of it original.

This is a very warm home, with French and foldable glass doors opening onto the courtyard offering a sense of invitation and transition constantly. The interiors are a bit dated occasionally—the kitchen, and a few of the bathrooms, could use a refresh—but the open-trussed ceilings and period-style fixtures look right at home.

There are five bedrooms and five baths throughout the home’s 3,256 square feet, including guest or maid’s accommodations. The master boasts a splendid kiva-inspired fireplace, but the others are as cozily charming, with windows offering soothing glimpses of green and growing.

The property exterior features several outdoor living areas, as well as water features, a fire feature, and a pool with a classic Saltillo tile sunlounge.
