A Cincinnati home designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright was on and off the market in less than a day. The listing price of the heavily modified cottage was $695,000. The sale price is as yet unknown, but may have tickled a million.

During Wright’s prolific career, he came to design approximately 60 “Usonian” homes all marked by features like flat roofs, glass walls, and cantilevered overhangs. These were attractive, lifestyle and work enhancing utilitarian spaces, house for young families and professionals. Typically found in the suburbs, the urban location of the Usonian residence likely made it even more desirable to buyers.

This house started life considerably smaller than it is now; today, it spans 2,500 square feet across two stories, with four bedroom s throughout. Open-concept living spaces, walls of glass, concrete blocks, Douglas fir, and African and Philippine mahogany give the home a mid-century aesthetic that now feels delightfully period without being heavy-handed.

The heart of the home is the 28-foot-long great room, a common living space intended to facilitate social interaction, showing off that optimism which also features heavily in the midcentury modern style. The kitchen is compact, but recently underwent a tasteful update.

Wright designed just three Usonian houses in the Queen City, and this special property was built in 1956.
