‘House of Cards’ Producer Closes on Sale of Malibu Home for $4.8M

Producer Joshua Donen sold his Malibu home this month for $4.77 million.

The “House of Cards” producer paid $1.3 million for the four-bedroom, Midcentury Modern-style home back in 1999, so it’s fair to say he made more than good on his investment. Built in 1976, the unique 3,344-square-foot residence is located in the guard-gated community of Sierra Retreat.

A first impression from streetside is fairly stark: white exterior, a grey, windowless front door, and geometric evocation.

Inside, things cheer up a little. Accents like built-in bookcases, vaulted and beamed ceilings, walls of glass windows, tongue-in-groove, and a step-down living room add to the Midcentury aesthetic and loosen things up a little. An architectural staircase separates the spacious living room from the dining room, kitchen, and an additional living space. Dark finish for the staircase treads and plank floors offers contrast to the prevailing white of the walls and ceilings, and contrast prevails in this home.

Exterior landscaping by architect Sean Knibb is quite private, and presents a great deal of scale. A lush lawn and arranged hedges support a solid exterior lifestyle accented with a fire pit, sports court, and swimming pool.

In addition to his work on “House of Cards,” Donen produced the popular 2014 movie “Gone Girl.”
