Lance Armstrong Takes $6.9M for Austin Home

After about two years on and off the market, Lance Armstrong’s home in Austin has finally sold. The home had seen a steady reduction in asking price since it first appeared in 2016 for $8.25 million. This past March it was broadly reported to have been reduced to $7.5 million, and this month it found a buyer willing to pay $6.89 million for it. Armstrong had owned the property since 2013.

The Spanish-style home dates to the 1920’s, and features a series of period embellishments that give it a firm footing in history: a clay tile roof, an arched entryway, Juliet balconies with wrought-iron balustrades, and lantern sconces flanking the front door give the home a potent sense of place and time.

The interiors are nearly as evocative. The narrow-plank oak flooring has apparently survived the years, providing lovely texture and an undeniable period feel. Plaster walls, arches, and light fixtures enhance the effect. Color tones are balanced well between warm and cool, and the home manages generally to strike a peculiarly effective equipoise between cozy and detached; witness the breakfast alcove.

The home’s amenities include a large wine cellar and tasting room, and a multitude of appealing outdoor features, including a pool, several terraces, and a cabana.

Professional road racing cyclist Lance Armstrong retired in 2011. In April of this year, he settled a Federal lawsuit for $5 million. The lawsuit had sought compensation upwards of $95 million on behalf of his sponsor, the U.S. Postal Service.
