Fashion-industry and Hollywood production heavyweight Sidney Kimmel has listed Johnny Carson’s former retreat in Malibu. Kimmel is asking $81.5 million for the property, which is located on the Point Dume bluffs, and extends to about four acres of intensely private—and spectacularly beautiful—park-like grounds. Kimmel and his wife purchased the property in 2007, along with two neighboring parcels, to build the sanctuary.

The house was designed by architect Ed Niles, and built in the late 1970’s. The home is a contemporary of the era, expressing the naturalistic preoccupations of that decade’s zeitgeist: wood is used extensively as an ornament within the house, and a huge amount of glass diminishes the border between interior and the exterior world.

To enhance the Japanese influenced modernism, arboreal plantings inside the home extend the ideal of residence-as-microcosm, and the interior rooflines continually suggest the changeability of a forest canopy. It’s an architectural approach that intoxicates, and seems dated only by way of quaintness.

The house features 30’ ceilings in the sun-drenched living area, which provide an energizing sense of scale and continuation. Rooms include a lounge, formal dining room, and a master suite which extends throughout the second floor; the master features his and hers baths, offices, and wardrobes, and a private oceanfront terrace.

The grounds include two acres of very carefully landscaped and maintained gardens, a tennis court, a guest house, and a pavilion. And beach access, of course.

Kimmel founded Sidney Kimmel Entertainment in 2004; the company has produced several best-bet arthouse hits, including ‘Synecdoche, New York’ and ‘The Kite Runner.’ He also founded the fashion consortium Jones Apparel Group. His net worth is estimated at $1.36 billion.
