Porsche Promises Its 2019 Cayenne Will Be the Sports Car of the SUV Segment

Porsche has evidently put a lot of time into its Cayenne reboot. Even a cursory look suggests the model may present serious competition for the BMW X7 which threatens on the horizon.

As it currently stands, the 2019 Cayenne is quite the looker. Porsche has liberated the model from the Touareg platform, allowing its design more freedom of expression. The grille is a dramatic statement, a Bauhaus-inspired design that is stark and beautiful, and the roofline has more gradient, sloping away to the rear spoiler. This is a Cayenne that looks much more refined than previous incarnations; the first generation was bold and beautiful but came off as a little awkward, showing the designers’ considerable efforts to reconcile sports sedan and SUV into a pleasing whole, and even the second generation seemed less than confident. This third generation may do the impossible: sway the buyer who walks into a dealership to buy a European sports sedan.

The car’s chassis is constructed from aluminum and steel, giving the car lighter weight, and a newfound rigidity that should—especially when combined with the new model’s staggered front and rear tires—be very discernible when driving.

The new Cayenne’s engine is a 3.0L V6 turbo, which produces 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque; Porsche claims the model’s 0-60 time bests the outgoing version by well over a second, and gives it a top speed of 152 MPH. A Cayenne S model will be available, improving acceleration, and bringing the top speed to 164. In both cases, Sport Chrono packages improve acceleration numbers and overall performance significantly.

Transmission and brakes are also updated for the 2019 Cayenne. The car will also feature active suspension and chassis control, preset off-road and road-going performance modes, and tech updates: assisted driving, new infotainment and control system.

The 2019 Cayenne is expected to be in dealerships next spring or summer, with a base price of $67K.
