A house owned in the 2000’s by formerly married actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe has hit the market with an asking price that’s just a shadow under $16 million. The home was designed by architect Gerard Colcord, who was heavily influenced by the traditional architecture of Western Europe and New England.

This particular example of Colcord’s work is informed by Anglican Church design, and features Tudorbethan overtones and details. Colcord was fond of engineered atmosphere, and often employed concrete beams finished in the appearance of raw timber; this home’s great room contains a series of them. He was also fond of a prominent fireplace, and used a great deal of stone and brick in his designs. His homes are beloved for their simple elegance, and comforting substantiality.

The home’s interiors are executed in dark wood, giving the home the dark quality of a neo-Tudor, but filtered through a Southern California-influenced design emphasizing natural light and interior/exterior fluidity. The home’s façade is expressed in brick, and features ornamental exposed timbers, with the rear of the home is finished in stucco, with a much more pronounced timber effect.

The property extends to nearly an acre of grounds, and is highlighted by mature trees, vines, lawns, patios, and a grass sunlounge centered by a simple pool with elevated spa.

Witherspoon and Phillippe married in 1999, and split about seven years later. She founded a production company, Hello Sunshine, and appears in the upcoming ‘Home Again,’ due in theaters this September, and the much-anticipated ‘A Wrinkle in Time,’ due in theaters next spring; he currently stars in and produces USA’s long-running series ‘Shooter.’
