Late Media Billionaire Jerry Perenchio’s Estate Lists the Beverly Hillbillies Mansion for a Whopping $350M

At $350 million, late billionaire and media mogul A. Jerrold Perenchio’s Bel-Air chateau is currently the most expensive residential real estate listing in the country.

Perenchio passed away this spring. He is most closely associated with Univision, which he co-purchased in 1992 for $550 million, and sold fifteen years later for $13.5 billion.

The house was designed by Sumner Spaulding and finished in 1933. Spaulding’s work includes both opulent golden age homes like this one, as well as the more modern architectural expressions which were to become popular a couple of decades later. He collaborated on a case study house, a series which employed sensibilities as far from those expressed in Chartwell as is possible to imagine.

The main house at Chartwell measures 25,000 square feet. It’s an imperious house, and it presides over ten acres of some of the priciest land in the country.

With a limestone exterior, and French blueblood styling, the home sets up its interiors for a predictably baroque execution. The sense of scale and the plentiful ornament follow, sweeping through the palatial interiors. The dining room—which is pictured below—is particularly representative of the whole.

The property’s ten acres contain baroque-style gardens, a guesthouse that measures nearly 6,000 square feet, a 75-foot long pool with pool house, a tennis court, and underground parking. It was also featured in the 1960’s sitcom ‘The Beverly Hillbillies.’

Perenchio purchased Chartwell in 1986, and, over the years, swallowed up the adjacent properties which now help comprise the breadth of the estate.
