‘Carol’ Star Rooney Mara Reduces Ask of Contemplative Modern in Los Feliz $200K

After about three months on the market, actress Rooney Mara has reduced the price of her home in the Los Feliz Oaks neighborhood. Mara listed the home in early May of this year with an asking price of $3.8 million, but recently dropped her expectations $200K in hopes of stimulating a quick sale. She purchased the home in the winter of 2015, for $2.9 million.

The high modern home, as it stands now, is the result of a multi-year renovation and restoration project. The original house construction dates to 1963, and features the whitewashed exterior, sense of transparency and modern blend of steel, wood and glass. Formerly toned with an acutely artistic eye, the house is at present a largely blank canvas. Some muted cool tones manage to sneak in, but the overall composition is extremely understated, and errs on the puritanical side of modernist interior design.

As it is so reticent in expression, the home’s new iteration suggests a detached demeanor. The steel beams used in the build bring the industrial influences in modern home design overtly into play, and the new terrazzo floors, which replaced the existing mid-toned plank hardwood, offer no answer to the chilly metallic influence, the geometric articulation of space, or the hard transparency of glass.

Still, there are playful flourishes—the use of pegboard, for example, the built-in shelving, and the homey touch of a window seat alcove to present a little ballast to all the lean-eyed objectivity. Modern design, when successful, is an expression of balance, equipoise through dialectical tension or dialogue. And there’s some thoughtful dialogue going on here. It’s just whispered.

Two bedrooms, with an office presenting the potential for a third. Sweeping views of Los Angeles from cantilevered decks.

Mara starred in the 2015 film ‘Carol’; she tied for Best Actress at Cannes for her portrayal of Therese. Next year will see her in the Gus Van Sant-directed biopic about satirical cartoonist John Callahan, ‘Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.’
