Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s Texas Estate Could Be Yours for Just $4M

Newly-minted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has listed his Texas estate at $3.975 million. Tillerson, having moved to D.C.’s Kalorama neighborhood, apparently sees little opportunity in the near future to take advantage of the resort home.

Situated on a riverfront parcel on the Colorado, the home is in the Horseshoe Bay development on Applehead Island. The luxury resort is an 80-acre development on Lake LBJ, a ‘master planned residential community’ with its own security force.

The house measures 5,857 square feet, contains four bedrooms and four baths, and dates to 1999. It’s designed in the modern villa style, with stucco walls and tile roof, and an earth-toned façade.

Within, the home is drenched in warmth, the interior color palette intended to suggest Tuscany. Beiges and soft yellows predominate, giving the home a soothing ambience. Limestone tile floors, raw wood accents, wall niches, and modern ceilings distinguish the home, giving it a rather engineered feeling of charm and contemporary design.

Pocket ceilings in many of the rooms give the spaces a sense of expansion, but, for the most part, the home is a somewhat claustrophobic collection of competing visual textures and influences; different kinds of stone, different woodgrains, carved embellishments, and periods represented from renaissance to modern. Without a central conceit to bring its disparate elements into meaning, postmodern style doesn’t work very well. It wanders in search of focus.

The property exterior is pretty, and features a reflecting pool, and a summer kitchen.

Tillerson was CEO of ExxonMobil before his appointment to President Trump’s cabinet.
