It is pretty commonplace for the New York City real estate scene to see historic townhouses hit the market. Case in point is this current $4.6-million offering that was built in the 18th century.

Although the residence retains its original millwork, what really makes this listing special is its provenance.

It was once the home of iconic magician Harry Houdini and his wife, Bess. The couple lived in the townhouse for 22 years, until Houdini passed away in 1926; they purchased the home in 1904 for $25,000. On top of that, it apparently served as Houdini’s personal playground and comes equipped with more than one surprise in store for a new owner.

One of these features is a massive sunken bathtub with a large mirror installed for Houdini to practice his underwater tricks. Another Houdini addition is full-house sound wiring, including an early version of “wireless” radio in the carpets. Other notes include bathroom tiles with “H” and “B” engraved onto them and a front door that actually opens from the hinge side when the handle is turned.

Since Houdini’s ownership, the townhouse has only changed hands a few times, with the current owner unaware of the home’s famous previous owner before he picked up the property in 1991. It has also since become an owner’s duplex, with a one-bedroom apartment on the second floor and a two-bedroom movement on the third floor.

The Houdini townhome could use some tender love and care, but considering the history attached, $4.6 million seems like a fair asking price.
