World-Renowned Photorealist Painter Chuck Close Picks up a Condo in Miami Beach for $3M

Portrait artist Chuck Close has invested again in the Miami Beach Setai, purchasing a two bedroom unit for $3.4 million. The property had been listed prior to sale at $4.2 million when it hit the market again, this past January; it had been previously on the market, in 2015, when it was offered at $4.5 million. It last sold for $2.985 million, in 2013.

The property spans 1,316 square feet of interior space, and contains a pair of bedrooms, both en-suite. It has been renovated by the Setai Hotel, and is set up as a rental in the resort and residential building.

The unit features mainly Japanese-inspired interiors, with lots of clean, strident lines, and an emphasis on natural evocation via the use of differing woods and wood grains, offering a pleasingly distracting textural interplay which is the dwelling’s only real ornament. It’s done well, though, and isn’t heavy-handed in any way, and so the composition never feels terribly contrived.

The galley-style kitchen features black granite countertops, stainless restaurant-inspired fridge, and nicely shaded hardwood floors offset by the cabinetry. But all the living spaces skirt the windowed corner of the building, and are quite attractive, with the livingroom featuring a column accent which appears out-of-place enough to be curious. Lighting throughout is track, with shaded furnishings.

The apartment’s wrap-around balcony takes in beach and city environs, offering a nicely comprehensive survey of the soul of Miami.

Close’s portraits of influential people are widely displayed. His work is included in the collections of museums globally, including the Tate in London, and the Georges Pompidou in Paris.
