Cyndi Lauper has listed her home in Connecticut. The singer is asking $1.25 million for the home in North Stamford, a French country-style home that dates to the mid 1970’s. Lauper purchased the home in the mid 1980’s, during her initial flush of success.

The house is filled with appealing details, and evidence of an unusual level of craftsmanship: stenciled accents, hand-hewn exposed beams, stone fireplaces. Doors reclaimed from 19th century construction, and tile and fixtures sourced from France, and England, help to convey the desired atmosphere. It’s a lovely vision, effectively escapist; filled with warmth, and enough detail to give the eye plenty to survey, but generally not so much that the composition becomes cluttered.

Most appealing? The great room, maybe. A stone fireplace and wall, natural ceramic hexagonal tile, and a step up foyer with double-door entry all rest beneath vaulted ceilings, a period pendant light fixture, and muted stencil designs. The kitchen is a little urbane enclave of contrasting black and white within the otherwise European countryside-influenced interiors, and features an island capped in a butcher block. An upper floor bath with a mosaic tile tub, stained glass window, skylights, and Victorian-influenced tile and detailing is fascinating, if a touch heavy-handed. A cedar-lined office on the top floor, incorporated the mansard roofline, features herringbone tile as flooring, and another stone fireplace.

The home measures a little under 4,000 square feet, and contains three bedrooms and 3.5 baths. The grounds extend to about an acre and a half, and incorporate low-key landscaping and a pool in a very private setting.

Cyndi Lauper’s transition from late new-wave icon to mature genre-hopping interpreter of standards has been very successful. Her ‘Memphis Blues’ album, in particular, offered searing interpretations of familiar songs, and allowed the vocalist the opportunity to channel a few of her influences, including Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday, into her singular delivery.
