The 2017 BMW M5 will feature BMW’s M xDrive system as standard. This may anger purists; in the model’s storied thirty-odd year history, it has been a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. But BMW is counting on the acute dexterity and response provided by the system to allay all concerns. And, RWD is still an option on the new M5.

M xDrive is a higher-performance oriented version of the company’s all-wheel xDrive system, which has been in use since the 2000’s. The M version features software specially designed for the unique demands of the M series cars. As RWD gives way to the potential of a software-driven AWD system, the M5’s ability to make rapid changes responding to road conditions, traction, speed and braking are markedly improved. And, the system is set up to generally favors the rear wheels.

Drivers may select between dynamic stability control, M dynamic mode, and DSC/MDM off, as well as three alternate M xDrive modes: AWD, AWD Sport, and RWD. The five combinations present a spectrum of possible configurations, customizable based on desired performance level and conditions.

The new M5 will also feature a redesign of the S63 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine which has been the mainstay of the model’s drivetrain for some years. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic, and that’s another first: a manual gearbox will not be an option for the new M5.
