China’s NIO EP9 Now Fastest Production Car at ‘Ring

About two months ago, we covered Chinese electric-vehicle startup NextEV’s astonishing NIO EP9, and its quick lap time around the Nürburgring.

At that time, the 1341-horsepower all-electric production car EP9 took to the Nordschleife track at the Nürburgring in Germany. It completed the “Green Hell” course in 7:05, 17 seconds faster than the previous record for a battery-powered car. NIO then took the EP9 to the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas, and put the hypercar through its paces on that 3.4-mile track for autonomous and non-autonomous heats.

In Austin, the EP9 achieved two recorded track times: the autonomous lap saw the EP9 cross the finish line at 2 minutes 40.33 seconds, with the car reaching speeds of 160 mph, and driving the fastest autonomous lap ever. With a driver, the EP9 completed a lap in 2:11.30, and reached a max speed of 170 mph to earn the fastest COTA lap time in a production car.

Most recently, we have to head back to Germany, and back to the “Green Hell,” as the specialists at NIO have now seen their EP9 take the overall fastest production car record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The EP9 took the course by storm, finishing in 6 minutes and 45.9 seconds, besting the Lamborghini Huracan, which got a lot of attention only a few months after setting the new record, completing the course in 6 minutes and 52.01 seconds.

NextEV launched the NIO brand late last November. That kind of track time, and rapid development, gives NIO, and NextEV, and Chinese electric vehicles in general an extraordinary exposure credibility, as Beijing continues to position itself as a leader in EV design and—very possibly—global sales in the next decade.

Although the first six examples of the EP9 sold out quickly, rumor has it NIO is going to produce another ten, at around $1.5 million a whack.
