‘NYPD Blue’ Creator Steven Bochco’s Takes $11.5M for Hawaii Estate—Half Original Ask of $23M

Steven Bochco—best known for his work on cop procedurals ‘NYPD Blue’ and ‘Hill Street Blues’—has finally sold his estate on the big Island. The writer and producer accepted $11.5 million for the property, about half the rather sanguine original asking price—just under $23 million. The asking price prior to the sale had been a little under $13 million.

The Kamuela home was custom constructed for Bochco in 2003, and is designed in the Japanese Pacific style, with open-trussed ceilings, a segmented layout, and water features and pool incorporated into the living space. Most appealingly, the master suite is accessible only over an arched footbridge, making it a retreat within a retreat.

The property is located within the Mauna Kea Resort. It measures a little over 6,300 square feet, and contains six bedrooms and 6.5 baths, including the master. All bedrooms are en-suite, and essentially self-contained.

The design favors both community and private life; to that end, media room, guest bedrooms, and the centralized living and dining area are all discrete, but connected. Retractable glass walls, or shoji-influenced sliding doors, open to the landscape at every opportunity. Tones are generally green, or warm natural wood, augmenting the interplay of the interior and exterior of the home.

The estate is mainly solar-powered; both eco-friendly, and eminently practical, considering the location.

Bochco and his wife Dayna—who is an environmental lawyer, as well as a television producer—own another, more manageable property in the resort.

Steven Bochco’s television projects include ‘L.A. Law.’ He collaborated with writer and producer David Milch on ‘NYPD Blue’ and ‘Hill Street Blues.’
