Forty-third President of the United States George W. Bush has published a book of his own paintings. Called “Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors,” it is already a best seller.
The book features 66 oil paintings of U.S. service people that former President Bush has come to know on a personal level through his work helping veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars transition back to regular civilian life.
Each portrait in the book is joined by a statement written by the former commander in chief telling the story of the person he painted. These statements detail the subject’s military service, injuries suffered by them in the line of duty, and their journey of recovery.
“Portraits of Courage” came out on February 27 and was a bestseller by March 9. Former President Bush also has the original paintings and a four-panel mural on display at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.
“I’m not sure how the art in this volume will hold up to critical eyes. After all, I’m a novice,” Bush wrote in the book’s introduction. “What I am sure of is that each painting was done with a lot of care and respect.”
