With the Formula E proving professional EV racing it isn’t a passing fad, many teams have begun to fully invest their time and resources into making race cars that can win the series’ events.

The FIA, the orchestrating force behind Formula E, Formula One, and the World Endurance Championship, recently made a large step in affirming the future of its Formula E series by announcing Spark Technology as the supplier of the upcoming generation of cars for Formula E. The move only affirms SRT’s role in Formula E, with the France-based company serving as the source of the SRT_01E, the model used by Formula E since it began in 2014.

The new Spark model that will first appear in Formula E during the 2018 racing season is the new SRT05e, which is expected to look much like the concept car seen here. While the model’s appearance might change, the heart of the beast will stay the same, in order to ensure it fits the Formula E requirement of finishing each race on a single charge.

The new design boasts a larger battery pack that will reportedly hold a 54-kilowatt-hour charge, a massive boost from the 28kWh pack currently used in the SRT_01E. Spark Racing had to change the design slightly to accommodate for this larger, heavier battery pack. It also went on to add safety features such as a windshield, all while making the new concept for the SRT05e more sleek and appealing than the already futuristic model Formula E vehicles drivers feel lucky to compete with.

As Formula E grows, the list of car brands participating grows, too. Companies like Audi, Renault, Mahindra, and Citroën’s DS sub-brand already have cars in the series, along with startup electric car makers NextEV and Faraday Future. And Formula 1 legends BMW and Mercedes-Benz have begun the process of forming teams of their own that are expected to enter Formula E in the near future, giving the racing series unimpeachable cred.
