Cashing in on the increasing market demand for high-end renovations of iconic vehicles, the folks at Land Rover Classic are bringing this to market: the 1978 3-door Range Rover, redux.

The design—which, in some eyes, more accurately reflects the company’s veldt-meets-suburban history than more contemporary offerings—has long been revered for its simplicity and elegance. So Land Rover Classic obtained a few examples that met conditional criteria, and began to develop them as a kind of new-old-stock consumer offering.

As with their Jaguar E-Type renovations, the 1978 Range Rover is built with new parts which have been gathering dust in company inventory. As a marketing idea, it’s pretty airtight: put old, unusable material to work, give the product the cachet of the customized and historical, and make a pretty penny.

And the results speak for themselves. Carefully constructed, and absolutely faithful to the original design and feel, such vehicles will become more and more striking on the road as they represent more and more of a contrast with contemporary design. The example shown in the photos below sports a color popular during the era: Land Rover calls it Bahamian Gold.

The pared-down design features the familiar 3.5L V8, and a four-on-the-floor manual. Yes, the carburetor remains; not very fuel-efficient, but, then, this isn’t made to be a daily driver.

No word as of yet on U.S. availability, but U.S. pricing will probably hover around $175K.
