J.D. Roth, Co-Creator of NBC’s ‘Biggest Loser,’ Buys $7M Estate in Montecito

Less than two months after listing a Montecito cottage retreat on about one acre, television producer J.D. Roth has landed another, larger property in Montecito. The producer’s newest acquisition, according to Variety, carried a selling price of $7 million. Roth’s property-for-sale remains on the market, with an asking price of $3.95 million.

The new home is an Northeastern U.S.-influenced design, sprawled into three wings that contain 7,400 square feet of living space. The property contains a total of five bedrooms and 7.5 baths, including the guest house. There is a poolside cabana.

The exterior of the main residence is very traditional—shingle-style, dormer windows, brick chimney—and the interior follows through with many design elements of comforting familiarity. There are wood tones a-plenty, with wide-plank hardwood floors, exposed beams, and paneling, and walls are off-white or papered in subdued designs. Fireplaces add country charm. Roth’s early years were spent in suburban New Jersey, so perhaps the home’s overall appeal for him is nostalgic.

The guest house might be the most charming living space, though. With soft yellow walls contrasted with powder blue and, in the bedroom, a set of dark green French doors that open onto a brick patio, it’s simple, quiet, and unadorned. The roof is steeply pitched, so the ceiling in the main living space is dramatically vaulted; a second bedroom, in cozy attic design, is located on the upper floor.

The property’s landscaping capitalizes on its location; mature trees abound, and a stream runs through the property. A putting green seems a little out of place, but is well-incorporated into the overall vision.

J.D. Roth—of ‘Biggest Loser’ fame—runs 3Ball Productions. He is currently the producer of Spike TV’s ‘Bar Rescue.’
