Def Leppard Drummer Rick Allen Sells Calabasas Home for $1.6M

After a price reduction or two, Drummer Rick Allen’s Calabasas house recently closed. The legendary heavy-metal musician and his wife, singer Lauren Monroe, collected $1.645 million on the sale; the selling price registers a little under the $1.66 million the couple paid for the home in 2008.

The home couldn’t be a more classic example of a late 70’s/early 80’s iteration of the contemporary residence: intersecting rooflines, dramatic and hard angles, and flourishes like diminishing grouped windows, two-tier wraparound deck, and abundant geometric references set up a nice contrast with warmer interior elements: lots of naturally-finished wood, a liberating sense of collapsed interiority and exteriority, and a fieldstone fireplace for some traditional grounding.

The home measures 2,166 square feet, and contains three bedrooms and three baths. The influence of Japanese design sensibilities is evident, which isn’t too surprising, as they are typically noticeable within the style. The rolling library ladder accessing the greatroom bookshelves is worthy of note—toning it cool in opposition to all the mid-toned wood was a nice touch.

The property’s exterior features a modest flagstone pool/spa area and meditation garden amid its half-acre of land. But the deck, which offers views of the surrounding countryside, is the selling point once one steps outside.

Rick Allen began his professional career in his teens. The unstoppable drummer became a legend in the 1980s when he turned a potentially career-ending injury into a personal triumph. Allen and Moore founded the Raven Drum Foundation in 2001; the foundation explores musical expression as a springboard for personal growth, and an abstract language for community enrichment.
