‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Director Steven Soderbergh Gets $4.8M for Chelsea 3-Bed

After over two years, filmmaker Stephen Soderbergh has sold his Chelsea loft. The selling price was $4.8 million. The apartment had been listed at $5 million.

Measuring 4,000 square feet, and containing three bedrooms, the residence occupies one full floor of its building. The master suite features a spa bathroom in marble, and there is a media room, roof access, and elevator entrance.

The apartment’s ten-foot ceilings, abundant glass and whitewash are neatly balanced with dark-toned oak floors; a nice foundation for the loft’s more pleasingly eccentric design elements. A dining-room chandelier playfully showcases differing forms and colors, and an aluminum garage door is put to use as a retractable partition between bedroom and main living space, a nifty industrial mannerism that works by virtue of novelty and insouciance.

In 2015, Soderbergh sold a Franklin Street residence, and purchased a 3,100 square foot triplex in a converted Tribeca warehouse for $8.5 million. That residence features three bedrooms and three baths, as well as powder room and salon with 20-foot ceilings.

Soderbergh’s oeuvre traverses satire, tragedy, adventure, comedy and philosophical inquiry. At their most successful—for example, 1993’s ‘King of the Hill,’ or 2002’s remake of ‘Solaris’—they are unsentimental, literate, detached, and starkly beautiful. His most recent projects include the HBO film ‘Behind the Candelabra’ (2013), and this year’s to-be-released caper film ‘Logan Lucky.’
