Mercedes-AMG unveiled their newest GT model at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2018 GT C.

Fleet, low-slung, and equipped with AMG’s 4L V8, the GT C (coupe) is a hardtop version of the convertible the company introduced last year. The twin-turbo engine produces 557HP, generating 502 foot pounds of torque. Fitting between the S and R models, the GT C is distinguished from the S by an included rear steering system, increasing response and control. In initial takeoff, and up to about 60MPH, the system offers limited rear-wheel compensation, improving cornering dramatically; at speeds over 60, the rear wheels operate in sync with the front, for better high-speed control. The feature is offered as an option on the S, at an additional cost.

In common with the other 2018 GT models, the car sports a new, 15-bar grille and bumper, aligning the design definitively with the GT3 race car; and, like the others in the family, the model features AMG’s Airpanel active air-management system, a compensatory airflow that increases to provide additional cooling to engine and mechanics, as necessary.

AMG will introduce the model with a run of 50 examples, which the company is calling ‘Edition 50,’ to mark the 50th anniversary of the high-performance manufacturer. ‘Edition 50’ cars will include a special, twilight toned Graphite Grey Magno finish, microfiber steering wheel, black chrome highlights, and silver-and-black interior, giving those examples additional consumer appeal for their image and limited availability.
