If there’s such a thing as highbrow bling, this case study in overblown home design certainly qualifies; Jay Gatsby only wished he was this conspicuous. But, then, filling 37,500 square feet is tall order.

Situated on an 80 acre parcel in the sleepy, quaint seaside town of Cambria, the house sprawls along its square footage and design influences, getting in as many references as possible. Mainly, it’s a Florentine palace the designers were after, with a lot of marble, neoclassical flourishes, and frescoes and murals in the 16th century style. But there are gothic and Spanish design elements evident, too.

The property exterior is geared for entertaining, with large indoor and outdoor spaces engineered for that purpose, including a terrace that looks out over the vineyard, toward the 180-degree ocean views, complete with outdoor kitchen and wood-burning pizza oven; there is also a 4,500 square foot entertainment hall, with full bar, and a 9,000 square foot pavilion for larger gatherings. There are also stables, a helipad and hangar, and storage for a sixty car collection. 12 bedrooms and 17 baths are contained within the property. Other amenities include a wine cellar and tasting room, a four-bedroom guesthouse, and a caretaker’s residence.

The property borders a state park as well as conservation land, which is good news to anyone interested; the intoxicating spell of the property will not be broken by development in the area.

$55 million is the current asking price. The owner has also listed a Paso Robles winery for sale, for $21 million. A package deal may be possible…
