Gold-Medal Olympian Steve Lewis Buys Redondo Beach Home for $1.7M

Steve Lewis recently purchased this home in Redondo Beach. The selling price of the house was $1.69 million.

A 2015 construction, the home is very much in the contemporary style, with the open feel, soaring ceilings, lack of ornament, and abundant glass and light that are the hallmarks of the style. Including a master suite, it contains four bedrooms and four baths, with an additional quarter bath; it also features a wet bar and several terraces. The size and layout of the home are fairly ordinary. But the house is notable from a design standpoint.

In contemporary-styled homes, you expect a lot of hard angles and straight lines, and this example certainly fulfills expectations; even the sinks in the master bath are relentlessly angular. But all the straight lines and hard angles contrast beautifully with the more imaginative and sprightly design elements, such as the tiled kitchen backsplash, antique woodgrain, and warm-toned walls. Minimalist fireplaces sheathed in slate are balanced with hardwood flooring and soft yellow. The quiet, meditative effect of the coloration is in turn balanced by the industrial balustrade of the staircase, the planar lines of the walls, and the hardness of steel and glass. It is an exercise in equipoise, and is beautifully executed.

Fleet-footed Steven Lewis is a track-and-field legend. He took home three Olympic gold medals in 1988 and 1992 for relay and sprinting, and still holds 7 of the top 10 junior 400m race times.
