Penthouse in SF’s Troubled Millennium Tower, Owned by Late Billionaire Tom Perkins, Sells for $13M

A penthouse in San Francisco’s controversial and luxurious Millennium Tower has sold.

Owned by late venture capitalist and billionaire Tom Perkins, the unit fetched a respectable $13 million. That’s a fairly considerable price tag, considering that the development company, Millennium Partners, as well as San Francisco’s Department of Building Inspection, have been increasingly called upon by city’s Board of Supervisors to answer for questionable construction methods.

The penthouse is as striking as one would expect, and certainly alluring to a buyer unconcerned with the sinking, listing building. Touted by Millennium Partners as the largest reinforced concrete building in the Western U.S., the residences represent a lovely aggregate of modern and contemporary styles, with careful designing, and the penthouse is acutely representative.

Use of hardwood for ceilings as well as flooring balances all the glass and steel nicely and, largely, the condominium’s greater feel. In the living area, pools of contrasting hardwood lend a pleasing, artisanal contrast. The penthouse measures 5,500 square feet, and contains two bedrooms and two and a half baths. But it is the living area, and the terrace offering views of the financial district and Golden Gate Bridge, that are most notable; the former, with its staggered hardwood ceiling and sweeping flow, is especially appealing.

News of the Millennium Tower’s sinking into the soft soil which rests beneath its foundation—reportedly by as much as sixteen inches—and also of its listing six inches toward a neighboring building, have raised a storm of public outcry since August of this year, as well as a full-fledged investigation into the vetting techniques employed by building inspectors during the city building boom of the last decade. By the time of the building’s completion in 2009, it had reportedly already sunk a full eight inches.
