“Untitled XXV” by famed Dutch-American artist Willem de Kooning has fetched a record-breaking $66.3 million sale price at the recent Christie’s auction in New York.

The most expensive sale of a post-war contemporary art and the personal record for the artist, Christie’s actually had “Untitled XXV” valued at $40 million before the paddles raised the price. “Untitled XXV” also sold for $27.1 million at an auction 10 years ago, which at the time was also a record-setting price.

Willem de Kooning painted the seven-by-6.5-foot “Untitled XXV” in 1977, and the piece serves as a calling card for the multi-color and spirited brush strokes the painter became famous for during the 1970s.

Paired with the recent $54.5 million auctioning of Edvard Munch’s “Girls on the Bridge,” which was actually the second-highest auction price ever achieved by a Norwegian painter, “Untitled XXV” will set the standard for the global art market at upcoming auctions.
