After Iffy Negotiation, the Playboy Mansion Has Finally Closed

After it was reported at American Luxury and elsewhere that Daren Metropolous, the heir to the Hostess fortune and former owner of Pabst Brewing Co., had spent over $100 million on the Playboy mansion in a deal that would have allowed Hugh Hefner to stay there until his death, reports began to come out that the deal had fallen through because of Hef’s discomfort at the access Metropolous had requested for renovations.

That’s all behind us now. Metropolous closed the deal last week, in the largest home sale in the history of Los Angeles County.

Playboy Enterprises will pay $1 million a year to lease the 20,000-square-foot home. Also part of the deal: all of the arcade games and statues are included.

Among the iconic mansion’s staggering 29 rooms are a pair of kitchens, a wine cellar, a screening room with a pipe organ, a game room and twelve bedrooms including a two-story master suite. It’s also one of the few private residences in Los Angeles to have its own zoo license. Arboretums and aviaries dot the grounds, while albino peacocks, monkeys and exotic birds can be found throughout the property.

An orchard, a gym, a tennis court and a four-bed guesthouse join the mansion’s famous swimming pool and its attached grotto on the grounds.

Metropoulous also owns an adjacent property, purchased in 2009, and intends to connect the two estates once his new home is made available to him.
