Originally built for oil tycoon and father of Beverly Hills Max Whittier, this opulent mansion has such luxurious amenities as a 40-car garage, 18 bathrooms, 11 bedrooms, and a swimming pool, with a design inspired by ancient Greece and a total of 28,000 square feet of living space. The mansion is listed for $72 million.

The home also features other amenities such as a ballroom with a skylight, a gym and spa, and more. The ceiling are 30 feet high and every staircase is more extravagant than the last.

Whittier’s original 38-bedroom home burned down in the 1920s, however this mansion is built on the same site as the original and carries the same ideals and inspirations.

Whittier’s story is a classic rags-to-riches tale. He moved from Caribou, Maine, to Los Angeles and worked as a field hand before striking out on his own and creating several oil companies when oil was discovered in Los Angeles. On one particular tract of land, there was no oil, however, only water, so Whittier and his partners set up Rodeo Land and Water Company, which held 3,100 acres. They started selling off small lots in what would become Beverly Hills.

In 1935, Whittier’s family started Whittier Trust Company to manage its assets. By the time they sold the oil field to Shell Oil for $3.6 billion in 1979 in what was the largest corporate acquisition ever at the time, they had already become very wealthy.
