Manhole Cover Art in Japan

Manhole covers may not be the first thing that comes to mind when discussing art, but in Japan, there are nearly 6,000 manhole covers adorned in intricate and complex art. The manhole covers expand across many genres including geometric design, landscapes, and even portraits.

Photographer S. Morita has spent the last several years traveling around Japan and photographing these unique works of art.

This interesting form of street art began in 1985 when a bureaucrat attempted to make up for, or perhaps distract, people from the fact that their taxes were going to go up in order to complete a massive public works project.  His idea was to allow municipalities to design their own manhole covers.  Some held design contests within the community and others competed with nearby towns to see who could come up with the best manhole cover design.

From there the trend took off and artists began picking up brushes on their own accord to paint on the unique canvas of a manhole cover.

The popularity of manhole cover art has even led to the rise of the Japan Society of Manhole Covers, which keeps up with the artistic manhole covers in Japan. According to them, the most popular subjects for manhole artists to tackle are trees, landscapes, flowers, and birds.

It is easy to see why these creative manhole covers have caught the eye of Morita and his lens.  The covers bring life to an otherwise dull object and bring a special originality to every street one is on.
